TEA Party

By: D. Hoover

On December 16th, 1773, a group of citizens dressed as Mohawk Indians, known as "The Sons of Liberty", boarded three ships in Boston Harbor. They threw a total of 342 chests of tea overboard to protest the British government’s tax on this very important commodity. The British government was in debt over their recent war with the French, and decided they needed to tax the American colonies to help pay for their war. Obviously, some of the colonists were outraged. The waters in Boston ran dark for several days after the incident.
It is now our OWN government that is in enormous debt. It seems they are arbitrarily raising taxes on every thing from tobacco, alcohol, gasoline, and perhaps even sugar soon. They have incurred such a large amount of debt over the years, that now they feel it is necessary to tax their citizens for generations to come, over costs that could have perhaps been avoided in the first place.
I believe it is time for us to once again stand up in protest of this clearly unfair taxation and theft of our liberties. WE voted these same people into office who have squandered, and wasted our tax money for years now. WE have idly stood by like defenseless sheep, and shook our heads at the increasing amount of taxes being syphoned from our paychecks. WE have voted along party lines because our parents were Republicans or Democrats, and that’s what we were taught to believe in. Or WE simply didn’t participate in the voting process at all because we aren’t really interested in "politics".
My friends, it is my sincere belief that we are in a serious situation in this country. When the federal government over-reaches its authority, and ignores the states, and citizen’s wishes, it is becoming alarmingly reminiscent of the British government of 1773 imposing their debt upon us. Perhaps it has become time to again send a message to our leaders in Washington that our 10th Amendment rights should be upheld. There are pork and social programs that could be cut, as opposed to rasing taxes at this obscene level. Maybe, just maybe, the waters should run dark with tea for a few days again!
